We start a new edition of our program "I am a Woman, I am an Electrician"
Jun 3, 2024- According to UNESCO, only 35% of professionals in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are women.
- The program grants 20 full scholarships to train young women in basic home-type electrical installation work.
Lima, June 3, 2024. At the end of 2023, only 35% of professionals in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are women, according to UNESCO. Although the proportion has been increasing over the years, the gap still remains high.
In this context, SENATI, together with INDECO by Nexans, Sonepar and the new ally Legrand, enthusiastically presented the second promotion of the I am a woman, I am an electrician program. This initiative, which began in 2023, aims to empower women in the electrical sector by providing 20 full scholarships to a training program that will allow them to carry out basic work on home-type electrical installations, and which this year will have between their ranks to members of the Aviation Division of the Peruvian Army and the NGO Caritas.
I am a woman, I am an electrician aims to contribute to change and promote female empowerment in a sector traditionally dominated by men. The program provides students with the tools and knowledge necessary to develop in the electrical sector, and thus have the opportunity to build the future they want.
The opening ceremony took place at the SENATI headquarters with the participation of representatives of the allied entities, the scholarship students and their families. “By being part of the program, the students are breaking down barriers and creating a lasting legacy. They are not just learning a profession: they are transforming an industry and, with it, our society. Every step you take on this journey is a step towards a more equitable and inclusive future,” said Alex García, General Manager of INDECO by Nexans during the event.
“At SENATI, we have always sought to encourage the interest of more women in technical careers, and this year we have reached a total of 31,000 female students. This initiative by Peruvian companies is very satisfactory for us, as it aligns with our commitment to promoting female participation in technology-oriented careers, such as electrician, automotive and welding, despite being professions that are traditionally associated with men. This motivates us to invite allied companies to contribute to reducing gender gaps in the industry,” said Carlos Hernández, Development Manager of SENATI.
For his part, François Brun, General Manager of Sonepar, said: “This program has been designed with the objective of empowering more women to join the electrical industry, an industry traditionally dominated by men. May this scholarship be a springboard for you to achieve your goals and become mentors and inspiration for future generations of female electricians.”
Finally, François Prez, General Manager of Legrand, said: "At Legrand we firmly believe that gender should not be an obstacle to pursuing a career in any field, and we are proud to support these women who are willing to break stereotypes."
It is important to mention that, in the case of the first promotion, INDECO by Nexans committed to granting a full scholarship to the first five places in the program to study the Industrial Electricity degree at SENATI. This same commitment is now extended to the students of the second promotion, thus ensuring the same opportunities for students who stand out in the program.
With the incorporation of Legrand as a new ally, I am a woman, I am an electrician is consolidated as an initiative committed to closing gaps in the country.
