Nexans Fundation

Established in early 2013, the Nexans Foundation aims to support the development of electrification in disadvantaged communities worldwide, with a focus on grassroots partnerships and sustainable solutions.

Why a foundation?

Nexans became the first player in the cable industry to establish a Corporate Foundation to work for the public interest.

The creation of the Nexans Foundation emerged as a natural evolution of the Group's commitment to professionalize international initiatives in this field toward a common perspective. Since its inception, it has sought to provide access to energy for disadvantaged populations, thereby contributing to their human, social, environmental, and economic development.

The Foundation has three main missions:

  1. Support sustainable electrification projects aimed at reducing energy insecurity and poverty worldwide.
  2. Promote training and education for populations in technical, energy, and environmental fields.
  3. Provide support for environmental projects related to electrification issues, such as climate change, energy efficiency, and the protection of resources and biodiversity.

Nexans Foundation in Peru

The NGO EcoSwell, with the support of the Nexans Foundation, Indeco By Nexans, and Huemura, has inaugurated the installation of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system and solar panels to ensure the energy resilience of the Jose Abelardo Quiñones Health Center in Talara.

In the Piura region, as in many provinces of Peru, there are frequent power outages, especially during events like El Niño, which jeopardize the integrity of vaccines and other vital medicines within health centers. These blackouts have resulted in the loss of thousands of soles worth of vaccines and medicines due to the inability to power the cold chain. According to the WHO, 50% of vaccines are lost annually due to high temperatures resulting from poor cold chain management.

The energy problem faced by the Jose Abelardo Quiñones Talara Health Center is a challenge experienced by most health centers in the country, especially in remote provinces far from the capital. Furthermore, as it is not an executing entity of the MINSA (Ministry of Health), the hospital had to use the budget allocated for other important purposes to cover the cost of the power generator every time a blackout occurred. This measure was not sustainable and required a better solution.

Therefore, Nexans Foundation and Indeco by Nexans are committed to ensuring that the most vulnerable health centers in Piura have an energy backup system.

This is the first medically resilient energy center, with many more to come in the coming months!
