"Companies should educate the market about the environmental impact of the product we sell"
Aug 4, 2023- This was stated by Alex García, General Manager of Indeco by Nexans during an event called “Sustainable Construction: Shaping the Future”.
- The event gathered the public and private sector, guilds and civil associations that have the purpose of promoting the dialogue about the need to address the sustainability as a cornerstone in the construction sector.
Lima, August 04th, 2023.- As part of the event “Sustainable Construction: Shaping the Future”, organized by the company Indeco by Nexans, representatives from the public and private sector, as well as from guilds, and civil associations, met to talk about the need to address the sustainability as a cornerstone in the construction sector, recognizing that this approach does not consist on a mere concept, but rather a concrete way to build a more responsible future with the surroundings and the environment.
The meeting was attended by Jose Salardi, Executive Director of Proinversión; Alex García, General Manager of Indeco by Nexans; Leonie Roca, President of the Association for the Promotion of the National Infrastructure (AFIN); Rosa Bueno, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (CCL) y Antonio Amico, President of the Association of Real Estate Developers of Peru (ADI).
According to Alex García, of Indeco by Nexans, the sustainability in the construction sector can be analyzed from different angles, for example from the choice of materials, where the correct selection of electrical cables plays a relevant role. The counterfeit of these materials put Peruvian families’ lives in risk, beyond the additional costs generated, causing higher energy consumption costs, for example.
In that sense, he highlighted the responsibility the companies play in educating the consumers about the importance of purchasing safe and sustainable products. “Regardless the sector to which they belong, the companies have the responsibility to educate the market and make people aware of the environmental impact the products they buy”, said Alex García.
Rosa Bueno, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima stressed that the sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the business sector, and highlighted the guild’s commitment in the promotion of sustainable practices. "We are convinced that the sustainability way is not necessarily the shortest, but is the right one”, she said.
The CCL representative mentioned that the guild’s sustainability commission is developing a project that has the economic support of the European Union to help small and medium-size companies to enter the path of sustainability through the circular economy.
Antonio Amico, President of ADI, stressed the importance of the construction sector in Peru’s economic activity, being the second one that contributes the most after the mining. He also highlighted that several construction projects are currently implementing sustainable initiatives, such as the reuse of waste water through residual treatment plants, as well as the installation of underground electrical electrical cables that do not affect the environment and the use of alternative energies.
Finally, Leonie Roca, addressed the challenges facing the sector in the implementation of sustainable practices, including the public sector. “Unfortunately, a large part of the criteria used to approve public investments projects in Peru are mainly influenced by speed and costs criteria. And this approach tends to lack the sustainability component” The association’s representative added that nowadays, sustainable practices in the construction and infrastructure sector are focused on reducing waste generation and at the same time, maximizing process efficiency.
