Nexans Foundation, TECHO and EcoSwell will implement projects to improve access to electric power in vulnerable sectors
Aug 8, 2023- TECHO was selected by Nexans Foundation in Latin America to develop a project which aims to install public lighting poles in informal settlements in Peru, Chile and Colombia.
- The second chosen organization was EcoSwell, with whom the implementation of a solar energy supply system will be carried out, that will help the service operation in three health centers in Piura.
Lima, August 8th 2023. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), only 4% of Peruvian housings in 2021 did not have access to electrical supply. Even though the figure doesn’t seem high and has been decreasing steadily in the last 20 years, the proportion rises to 18.24% outside the urban area, according to the Diagnosis of the Gap Situation of the Ministry of Energy and Mining.
Based on this issue, Nexans Foundation selected the renowned non-governmental organizations TECHO and EcoSwell to transfer funds that will help in the project implementation aimed at broadening the access of electricity in vulnerable zones of the country, and thus improve the life quality of the population. Indeco by Nexans, representative of Nexans in Perú, will be in charge of working together with both organizations
One of the projects is Luz al Barrio, which will be carried out between TECHO Perú and Nexans Foundation, and plans to install 100 poles of public lighting in two informal settlements of Lima. In addition, workshops about energy efficiency will be held for volunteers and inhabitants of the beneficiary communities. The project will last six months and will impact 851 people with 1.702 direct beneficiaries. It is important to stress that the initiative will also replicate in Chile and Colombia, benefiting more than 4.500 people in the region.
On this behalf, EcoSwell will be responsible for the design and implementation project of a continuous solar energy power supply system, which will contribute to the maintenance of the services provided by health centers in Talara, Suyo and Buenos Aires (Piura region) encountered in a vulnerability situation, according to the Binational Development Plan for the Peru-Ecuador Border Region and the Ministry of Health.
It is in this context that EcoSwell and Nexans Foundation come together to carry out the solar panel installation project that will provide the aforementioned health centers with the essential electricity supply to maintain the cold chain and to ensure the operation of the equipment in the emergency room and in the pharmacy. It is important to mention that the project also had the support of the Regional Government of Piura, which co-financed the purchase of batteries.
The first project that will come into operation will be “José Abelardo Quiñones”, the Talara Health Center whose inauguration is scheduled this August 17. Meanwhile, the Suyo project will start in September of this year and will finish in August 2024, while the project in Buenos Aires Health Center will be carried out between September 2024 and August 2025. In total, the initiatives have planned to benefit more than 24 thousand people.

“ At Indeco by Nexans, we firmly believe in the transformative power of the energy, and that is why we could not be happier to know that this year there are 2 NGO’s in Perú that will receive funds to carry out projects of power access in Lima and in the north of the country, demonstrating how energy can improve life quality and open opportunities for a better future. We are committed to continue contributing to the welfare of those who needed most through initiatives like this, that make the difference ”
Luciana Ormeño
Manager of Corporate Communications in South America at Indeco by Nexans.“ Millions of people that live in informal settlements in Latin America do not have access to electricity in a regulated manner; much less the infrastructure that enables them lighting zones at night in their public space, which generate situations of insecurity and do not allow the full enjoyment of the neighbors in their neighborhoods. Thanks to the joint work between Nexans Foundation and TECHO, thousands of families in Chile, Perú and Colombia will be able to access to much safer spaces within their communities, through the installation of more than 150 solar-powered luminaires in 15 different communities. With this, we hope that neighbors of the neighborhoods can take better advantage of their streets, pedestrian paths, parks and community spaces at all times and have a much more dignified habitat ”
Daniel Ortiz
Coordinator of Social Areas of TECHO International.“ The implementation of solar panels in health centers of Suyo and Buenos Aires, in Piura, sets a significant step towards a more sustainable and accessible future for our communities. This initiative will not always strengthen the energetic resilience of these crucial areas, but will also have a direct impact on the quality of life of the inhabitants. We are committed to the positive change this technology will bring, providing reliable health services and improving the infrastructure in benefit of those who needed it most ”
