We held the event “ A life-saving decision: let’s say no to counterfeiting”

Piracy and informality of electrical products have severe economic consequences for Peru. According to a study conducted by DEE Consultores, with the support of Indeco by Nexans, the commercialization of counterfeit electrical products generates annual losses of up to PEN 9,709 million for the country.

Starting from this issue, we carry out the event “A life-saving decision: let's say no to counterfeiting”, within the framework of the World Day Against Counterfeiting and Piracy, which is commemorated every June 8. This space had the purpose of informing, analyzing and discussing the consequences of the acquisition and use of counterfeit products.

This event was held in two different spaces and, in parallel, bringing together our different stakeholders: electrical technicians, distributors, hardware stores, press, unions, local authorities, members of the Fire Department, representatives of companies in the electrical sector, among others. As part of this day, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a tour of our plant, where they learned in detail the processes and quality standards with which the brand's products are manufactured. Subsequently, through an experience zone, people were able to learn more about our innovations and the risks of buying counterfeit products.

It is essential to highlight that, in addition to having impacts on the legal and economic level, the use of counterfeit electrical products also brings significant social problems: in Peru an average of 31 fires are recorded every day, and according to the General Body of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru, 70% of these incidents are due to poor electrical installations, among the main causes are the age and lack of maintenance of the facilities, poor workmanship practices, as well as potentially counterfeit substandard products, among others.

“The figures provided by the study are alarming. It is true that both companies and the state suffer economic losses, but also there are also lives at stake. Therefore, we are pleased to join the initiative of EPEI (Trade Union of International Electrical Products Companies of Peru) to launch the Observatory to Fight Piracy, together with other companies within this organization, in order to fight against this market," said Alex García, General Manager of INDECO by Nexans.

Carlos Posada, Institutional Director of the Lima Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of strengthening the capacities of the officials in charge of control. “There is a deficiency in terms of knowledge of the sectors that need to be controlled. The effects of the illegal market are not being taken into account. "We must go beyond what the norm says."
